IFHP Physiotherapy Q&A
A patient is covered if they have a valid Refugee Protection Claimant Document or IFHP Certificate and are not yet eligible for provincial insurance (OHIP).
Coverage includes:
Prescriptions: Most essential medications (Co-pay of $4 per script starts May 1, 2026).
Basic Care: Doctor visits and hospital stays (100% covered).
Supplemental Care: Physiotherapy and chiropractic care (100% covered until April 30, 2026; 70% covered starting May 1, 2026).
1) Obtain a physiotherapy referral letter from a licensed physician (doctor).
2) Bring that referral, along with your valid IFHP certificate (Refugee Protection Claimant Document) and government ID, to our Milton or Pickering clinic.
Yes. Unlike some other programs, IFHP requires us to submit a “prior approval” request to insurance company before your treatment can begin. We will submit your doctor’s referral and our assessment details immediately, and we will notify you the moment your sessions are funded.
IFHP provides temporary coverage. It is valid until you become eligible for provincial health insurance. Once you receive your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card, your IFHP coverage for supplemental services like physiotherapy will expire.
